The Shape of Water (2017)

Directed by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy,Pan’s Labyrinth,Pacific Rim)

Starring:
I thought today would be a good day to write my review of The Shape of Water since it’s also the anniversary of The Creature from the Black Lagoon. I was late checking out this film and it was always on my list of movies to watch but I finally got around to viewing it and it was worth the wait. I’m a big fan of all the films that Guillermo has done and this one is no exception. I was hooked by the very first scene and taken back by the dark fairytale visuals that go on throughout the film. The use of green and the noir feel of the film really reminds me of movies like City of Lost Children and Delicatessen. There is almost a whimsical feel to this story that grows darker and ties in with the romantic side of the main characters. The acting is top tier and really jammed full with a great cast. Being that this is a Del Toro film, the special effects are amazing and the creature looks like something out of a Lovecraftian dream. By the way I believe Del Toro would do a Lovecraft film one hundred percent justice and I hear rumors that one is in the works. The Shape of Water is a really well done movie and I highly recommend it to everyone. There is something for all the cinephiles in this amazing movie. I give The Shape of Water a strong 9/10
